Learn more about our employees’ career journeys with Millennium through Q&A sessions.

In this “How I Got Here” feature, we speak with Emmett Hannigan, an Analyst based in our New York City headquarters. Emmett shares his unique experience moving internally at Millennium from a technology team to a trading team, and provides his perspective on how to best succeed at the Firm.

What initially excited you about joining MLP after you graduated?

Compared to traditional tech companies, Millennium offers a unique opportunity for computer science graduates: the ability to make an outsized impact very early on in your career. My manager made it clear that although I was joining as a junior member of the team, my ideas and contributions would start making an impact on day one. My interests have always centered around technology and finance, and Millennium is an innovator in both.

What have you learned here that you did not expect?

The breadth of Millennium’s tech stack surprised me the most. Due to the nature of being a multi-manager fund, Millennium well positions portfolio managers with an extremely diverse tech platform. From public cloud to latency critical trading, Millennium has experts in almost every domain. It seems that practically every coding language and technology on earth is used by at least one team inside MLP.

When did you become interested in equities and investing?

I became interested in systematic equities strategies while I was in college. In my free time, I began to develop a few simple strategies, and would backtest my code with compute instances in the cloud. More broadly, investing has been an interest of mine for my entire life. When I was younger, I would play online stock market simulator games and check my virtual portfolio daily.

How have you navigated transferring teams?

When I approached my manager about moving to a portfolio management team, he was nothing but supportive. Millennium has an internal mobility program that helped me navigate the process, and once I found a match, my new manager helped to ensure that the transition was as smooth as possible.

What advice would you give to someone starting their career at MLP?

One of the best parts of starting a career at Millennium is the opportunity to learn from experts. Make sure you start your journey with an open mind, and a willingness to learn new things. Millennium employees are welcoming and always happy to help if you ask questions.
