How I Got Here with Laura

Learn more about our employees’ career journeys through our “How I Got Here” series.

In this feature, we spoke with Laura King, a Project Manager based in New York City. Read about her journey from the US Marine Corps to a career in finance.

Looking back at the start of your professional journey, what was a key experience or decision that set you on the path to where you are today?

From early on in my career, I’ve always looked for the next challenge and opportunity to prove myself. Whether that was requesting the next deployment opportunity in the military or moving teams within a company to learn a new skill, I have always looked for ways to keep growing and learning.

You served in the military before transitioning to the corporate world. What was that journey like, and what drew you to a role at Millennium?

I joined the US Marine Corps when I was only 17 years old, which gave me discipline and focus at a very young age and translated well into a career in Financial Services where hard work, attention to detail and persistence are key. I’ve also found the industry to have a great veteran network. In fact, I was hired into my first Financial Services role by a fellow veteran. Ever since, I have continued to focus on building and maintaining a strong network which has paid off. I learned about Millennium from a former colleague that I worked with in my first finance role.

As a Project Manager, you work at the intersection of many different groups. What does collaboration look like for you, and what do you enjoy most about your role today?

Good collaboration on a project means each team/group bringing their expertise and doing their part to meet the objective. I love being a project manager at Millennium because I have the opportunity to work with some of the brightest minds across all areas of the firm to deliver quality results.

What is one piece of career advice you would share, especially to those navigating a career transition?

I would say not to be afraid to take a risk and take a new opportunity. Don’t wait until you feel ready – take the leap and trust your instincts.
